What might our most familiar terrains disclose? What might they represent? 34 Landscapes unites works by twenty-three artists in a meditation on the familiar landscape. Spanning established and emerging artists, the exhibition proposes the landscape as an anchoring subject, a recognizable format upon which an artist may lay their compositional and conceptual experiments.
Various environments are woven throughout the exhibition from the Earth’s characters––the mountain, sea, forest, and fields under a transient sky––to inner worlds of memory, imagination, and abstraction. The material world is preserved in Amanda Millet-Sorsa’s jeweled seascapes, created while the artist was researching pigments in Cyprus, while mystical inhabitants are coaxed from Dorothy F. Foster’s collaged peaks. Intangible meaning is expressed within physical planes as in Caroline Absher’s Lost Language, and in the unseen gravity of Isabelle Schipper’s paper chain girls, speaking to broader networks.
Landcapes features works by Caroline Absher, Sutton Allen, Greg Burak, Damien H. Ding, Katelyn Eichwald, Claudia Keep, María Korol, Sarah D’Ambrosio, Kevin Ford, Dorothy F. Foster, Sebastián Hidalgo, Drew Kohler, Joe Light, Amanda Millet-Sorsa, Eric Palgon, Mariana Paniagua Cortés, Chris Peckham, Isabelle Schipper, MC Sparks, Aineki Traverso, Melvin Way, Phyllis Yao, and Matt Zaccari.
